Cape Arago State Park!

We met a wonderful couple while we were at Bullards Beach Campground that told us of a terrific storm that was in the Gulf of Alaska that was creating some amazing waves at Cape Arago! We jumped into the truck and headed 25 miles north to the cape, and wow! So glad we made the side trip.. going to try to include more pics this time; turns out that when I posted the larger pics I was limited to the overall size of the post. If you want to see the larger pics please just click on them.

Shore Acres Botanical Garden! What a nice surprise to see such a gorgeous, well-maintained treasure so close to the beach (only 100 yds.)

Now for the waves..wow! this is one of the most spectacular coastlines we’ve ever seen, and with the high surf it was magical. We stayed until we were kicked out by the park ranger.

This is a pic of the jetty near our campsite. The surf was just starting to get interesting.

Check out how high the spray is! The cliff to the right in the background where you can see people standing is over 120′ above the surf, so the spray was close to 150′ high!

To the left of where we were standing. The crowd along the seawall were oohing and ahhing the whole time. When the larger waved crashed into the rocks sometimes the percussion would shake our ribs; an incredible day!

See the Sea Lions? On a calmer day we’d clearly hear them, but the ‘whumping’ of the waves drowned them out completely. Glad we weren’t out on that sea! Funny, but it wasn’t all that windy; the surf wasn’t dependent on the wind, apparently.

Old Town, in Bandon. Only two blocks long but beautiful and funky. Great art galleries and very friendly people. Gorgeous weather to boot. A storm was expected the next day, so we were off for California! Black Bart to the right..

Thanks, Mark! We’d never seen a surf like that..felt very vulnerable standing there with our ribs shaking from the crashing surf.

We just had a tornado touch down in Kelso and Longview today (Thursday) about 2 p.m.  A lot of damage but no injuries.
